YOTS Authors

This project is a collaborative effort between two friends named Shawnté and Brooke who share a mutual fascination with pretty much every single thing in the universe.

Always on the lookout for awesome things to learn / see / discover / smell / think / eat / experience, Brooke mentioned a stash of old books she borrowed from a friend, which included the 1947 edition of the Girl Scout Handbook (Intermediate Program).

A quick flip through solidified it – this thing is stuffed full of magic. Covering subjects from Ice Rescue to Ballroom Dancing to Leatherwork and Citizenship, it’s astonishing to see how wide ranging the Girl Scouts program was in 1947 (and for that matter, still is today).

Girl Scout Handbook

We started talking – how cool would it be to try earning some of these badges today? (Answer: very cool.) But even beyond that – could we actually learn and perform the skills required of these girls, or would it be harder than we thought? (Answer: yes, we think we can – and yes, it will be).

So we made a pact. We’re going to try this crazy thing, see if we can transport our modern selves back to a time before computers and email and automatic this and instant that (well…for the most part), and get down and dirty with those Girl Scouts from 1947. We want to use our hands and brains, and hopefully come away with some new skills, a deeper connection to what’s really important in life, and the kind of experiences that will influence our lives – and maybe even the lives of our friends, families, and you, dear readers – for years to come.

This is awesome…annd strangely I came up with the same idea almost exactly. Instead of coming across an old book I was more or less just thinking about how i’d always wanted to go through the scouts but never did. As the mom of a son I’m not going to be going through it with him so I don’t really have any options. At least that’s what I thought. I jumped online and saw that I could purchase all the materials I needed to work through the girl scout program, wear the sash, earn the badges, all of that.

I’m so excited to follow along with you ladies and my friend and I attempt a similar feat!

  4. Hi, Brittany – thank you so much for the awesome comment! We’re having a blast and hope that you do, too 🙂

  5. I love the spirit of this. Get back to a less distracted time. Step away from the screens.

  6. Thanks so much – it’s been a wild, fun, thought-provoking, and really spectacular ride so far!
